Booting an EPC-9 System can be complicated!

First, you need to know if you are using the on-board IDE controllers on the EPC-9 or are you using a separate EXM-9, MX-250 or MX-500 HDD?

If you are using on the on Board controllers, there is a setting for integrated peripherals in the CMOS settings to enable the on-board controller. If you are using an external controller like the EXM-9, MX-250 or MX-500, the internal controller must be turned off and the EXM port must be configured instead.

In CMOS Setup:

Integrated Peripherals

Diskette Controller = Disabled
Local Bus IDE Controller = Disabled
On board Ethernet Controller = Enabled
On board SCSI Controller = Disabled

Locate the EXM-9 BP card slot and set the EXM slot configuration for the IDE Disk Controller

Enter F6 07 00

Note that the card slot numbers begin at 0, 1, 2... but on some systems slot 0 and 1 are occluded from use so the first accessible slot is 2, 3, ...etc. It is crucial that slot number and the parameters are correct.

The newer board (Pentium 200MMX) instead of a 166MHz should have helped the situation because the BIOS is able to see larger drives. The higher speed should also not be an issue. However, the memory size is possibly an issue because OS2 operating systems do have memory minimum of 16MB RAM to boot and NT2000 requires a 32MB RAM min. In addition to the operating system minimum requirement, the software requirements may be higher. Most systems have 64MB. This can be checked on the booting to see the physical memory that is recognized by the BIOS.

The "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND" message occurs when the BIOS can not find the boot sector on the HDD. This can occur when the EXP parameters for the HDD controller are not set correctly or when the Logical Device and Physical Device parameters are not the same. Clearly the BIOS will limit what can be entered for Heads and Cylinders but these values may only work if the actual HDD was formatted as a smaller drive.

For example, a newer HDD that is more than 2GB can not be natively accessed by OS2. In this case, a larger physical drive, say 500GB can be formatted and partitioned as a smaller logical partition so an operating system that has limits can see it. The size setting of 2000 (2000MB or 2 GB) is typical but this assumes the HDD is formatted as a 2GB drive and the following IDE parameters are set:

USER 2000 3876 16 63 none
multi Sector Transfers: 16 Sectors
LBA Mode Control: enabled
32 Bit I/O: disabled
Transfer Mode: Fast PIO4

Not all HDDs can use these settings and some experimentation is required to find the optimal settings.
